The busted race car is definitely one of the most moving for me. He's all about striving and straining and failing anyway, about how almost tasting victory but remaining so far from it is almost worse than not even trying, given that he ultimately wound up in the same place as all the other cars.

Nice analysis.

The wonderful thing about that song is that there seems to be something in it to touch everyone, as each car exhibits a different sense of what it means to be "Worthless," or how people can take many different paths all to arrive at the same place of destruction. The reservation truck was always meaningful to me because he is an accurate representation of some of the people I grew up around, but the pink convertible haunts me because her simple verse reflects feelings that I sometimes struggle with.

I just can't, I just can't
I just can't seem to get started
Don't have the heart to live in the fast lane
All that is passed and gone

Definitely the pink convertible is the saddest. Why? The ethics textbook in my brain says that at least the reservation truck exhibits autonomy and his outrage at being rendered valueless stems from his inherent pride and self-esteem (much like the outrage of Native Americans everywhere), while the pink car is a helpless victim of pure despair and goes to her death understanding nothing of why she was ever put on this Earth to begin with.
